Nuremberg: Anton Koberger 10 March 1493. Median 2 o (348 x 238 mm). Collation: a-z 8 A-Z 8 AA 6 BB 8 [CC] 4 (a1r title, a1v blank, a2r text with commentary surround, BB8v blank, CC1r blank, CC1v table, CC4v colophon). 386 leaves. Printed in red and black. 73 lines of commentary, double column, table in five columns. Types: 14:130G (title and headlines), 15:91G (colophon), 18:83G (text), 12:64 a(71) (commentary). One- and two-line Lombard initials printed in red. 4- to 7-line initial spaces with printed guide-letters. Initials supplied in blue, the first with green, red and yellow decoration. Two pinholes per page in one of two positions, both in outer margin, or one in upper outer margin and one in lower margin. CC1.4 printed on smaller paper measuring 335 mm in height. (Occasional light browning, minor marginal worming in 2 quires, paper flaw in one leaf affecting a few letters.) Binding : contemporary blind-tooled calf over thick unbevelled wooden boards, probably bound at the Augustinian monastery at Eberhardsklausen by Johannes Lysure (active there in 1493, cf. Schwenke-Sammlung , workshop I), sides diapered, compartments on upper cover filled with hatched Kopfstempel ( Schwenke-Sammlung 13), rosette ( Schwenke-Sammlung 406) and pierced heart (not in Schwenke-Sammlung ), two brass fore-edge catches (lacking one clasp, the second nearly detached), rear board with one (of 4) wooden bosses, pastedowns from Hebrew manuscripts on vellum (see below), red leather index tabs (rebacked partly preserving original backstrip, other minor repairs, rather worn in part). Pastedowns : two large fragments from a Babylonian Talmud (Talmud Bavli) manuscript on vellum, written in a Sephardic Hebrew square script, probably in Italy, 15th century. Both fragments are from the Kiddushin tractate. The front pastedown contains text from folio (daf) 34,A and concerns commandments that are time-bound (therefore women are exempt from them); the second fragment (daf 42,B) concerns assessing the value of goods or real estate. ALL EARLY MANUSCRIPTS, EVEN FRAGMENTS, OF THE BABYLONIAN TALMUD ARE RARE. The Decretals of Gregory IX, a supplement to Gratian's Decretum , were collected and edited by Raymond of Penafort (1185-1275). The principal gloss is that of Bernardo of Parma (d. 1266).
