Beschreibung:

GREEK HELLENISTIC GILT ENGRAVED CUP 2nd-1st century BC A silver parcel-gilt conical bowl with concentric gilt rings to the inner face, band of scrolled foliage on a hatched field, rim with running scrolls within beaded borders. 283 grams, 18cm (7"). Fine condition, accretion to outer face. Provenance Property of a French gentleman living in London; formerly in a European collection; acquired prior to 1981. Supplied with a positive X-Ray Fluorescence metal analysis certificate. Published Accompanied by an Art Loss Register certificate. Footnotes Bowls of similar form made in silver, glass, pottery or bronze were common in the Mediterranean world in the 1st millennium BC up to the 1st century BC. The rounded bottom prevented them from being set down on a flat surface. The cup is very similar to one that was found with a hoard of silver-gilt objects and known as the Morgantina treasure found on Sicily. The type of cup is typical of the eastern Hellenistic styles, with examples being found in the Seleucid kingdom.
