GRAY, Thomas. Odes . Printed at Strawberry-Hill for R. and J. Dodsley, 1757. 4 o (251 x 193 mm). Engraved title vignette by C. Grignion after R. Bentley. With half-title. (Some browning.) Bound with 10 other verse pamphlets in contemporary mottled calf, gilt-panelled spine with lettering-piece reading: "Miscel/lanies," green silk marker (upper cover rehinged, lower joints cracked, spine chipped), calf-backed brown cloth solander box, spine gilt-lettered. Provenance : William Downes (bookplate) -- John Hayward (pencilled inscription) -- purchased from Seven Gables Bookshop, New York, 22 August 1972. FIRST EDITION. THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED AT HORACE WALPOLE'S STRAWBERRY HILL PRESS. The two Pindaric odes, written in 1754 and 1757, have the opening lines "Awake, Aeolian lyre, awake" and "Ruin seize thee, ruthless King.' Both are untitled, but were subsequently called "On the Progress of Poesy" and "The Bard". 2000 copies were printed. Ashley II, p. 159; Hayward 174; Hazen 1; Northup 180; Rothschild 1067.
