GRANT, Ulysses S. Autograph envelope with free frank, signed ("U. S. Grant"), as President, n.d. 1 page, oblong, 5¾ x 3¼ in., on Executive Mansion letterhead, with engraved portrait . A GRANT PRESIDENTIAL FREE FRANK. Grant writes to the American Ambassador to Great Britain, Robert C. Schenk (1809-1890), "Introducing Dr. Kittor," according to the autograph notation on the envelope (letter not present). Schenck was a fellow Civil War veteran who fought against Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley campaign of 1862 and was wounded at Second Bull Run. He resigned from the Army in 1863 to take a seat in Congress and served on the joint high commission that settled the Alabama claims.
