"First ed. in Dutch of the 1st part of Pérez de Hita’s major historical novel "Historia de los bandos de los Zegríes y Abencerrajes", better known as the "Guerras civiles de Granada" (1st pt published Saragossa 1595; 2nd pt 1619). The 1st part of Pérez de Hita’s novel is "a remarkable work of fiction on a basis of history but interspersed with frontier and Moorish ballads already circulating out of context and ending with the fall of Granada in 1492. It inspired dozens of imitations, including Washington Irving’s Chronicle of the conquest of Granada (1829), and many by French writers" (Ward p. 457). "It is followed here by a history, in Dutch verse, of the invasion of Spain by the Moors (pp. 449–504)" (Quaritch). Woodcut on title. In gothic type. Old names on title and endpaper. Ref. STCN (2).
