Letterpress title, dedication, preface, introduction, list of plates, 47 HAND-COLOURED LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES, some heightened with gum arabic, by Gould, William Hart and Henry Constantine Richter, printed by Hullmandel & Walton, Walter or Walter & Cohn, the colouring by a later hand, directions to binder bound in at back. Contemporary dark green morocco, covers with broad gilt foliate border, spine gilt in seven compartments with raised bands, lettered in two, g.e. (rebacked, extremities rubbed). Second edition of Gould's monograph on the Trogonidae: the first was published in 1836-8, and contained only 36 plates. This is essentially a completely new work: the text was re-written, the species figured in the first edition were re-drawn and twelve new species were added.
