Beschreibung:

GOULD, John. A Monograph of the Trochilidae or Family of Humming-Birds . London: by the author [1849-] 1861 5 volumes, large 2° (545 x 360mm.), 360 fine hand-coloured lithographed plates by and after Gould, H. C. Richter and W. Hart many highlighted with gold overpainted with transparent oil colours and varnish (occasional light, mainly marginal, spotting or soiling). Contemporary green morocco, sides with broad gilt borders, spines gilt in 6 compartments, g.e. (joints, corners and edges rather rubbed, a few abrasions) FIRST EDITION, without the supplement with 58 plates published by Henry Sotheran and completed in 1887 after Gould's death. The Humming-Birds is Gould's masterpiece, displaying his subtle new technique of accentuating the birds' plumage by the use of brilliant metallic colouring. Most of the specimens he worked from came from his own collection, many of which he exhibited at the Regent's Park Zoological Gardens during the Great Exhibition of 1851. Nissen IVB 380; Zimmer pp. 263-4; Fine Bird Books p. 78 (5)
