Edited and superintended by Richard Brindsley Hinds, London: Smith, Elder & Co., October 1843-January 1844]. 2 parts in one volume, 4° (309 x 248mm). Letterpress section title, 16 hand-coloured lithographed plates drawn on stone by B. Waterhouse Hawkins after Hawkins and Gould, printed by C. Hullmandel. (Slight creasing to upper outer corners of plates, occasional light browning or spotting.) 20th-century green half morocco gilt, original wrappers to part III laminated on verso and bound in, top edges gilt (spine faded, lower joint rubbed, upper joint split). Provenance : George Newbold Lawrence (1806-1895, New York, signature in pencil). FIRST EDITION WITH AN INTERESTING PROVENANCE, INCLUDING DESCRIPTIONS AND ILLUSTRATIONS OF 11 NEWLY DISCOVERED SPECIES. Although complete in itself, the present work is also parts III and IV of the complete Zoology of the voyage of the 'Sulphur', edited by Hinds. Parts I and II are by John Edward Gray ( Mammalia ); parts V, IX and X are by John Richardson ( Ichthyology ) and parts VI - VIII by Hinds ( Mollusca ). George N. Newbold was one of the founders of the American Ornithologists Union, an authority on humming birds and the birds of the West Indies and Central America. He corresponded with Gould over a lengthy period.
