Beschreibung:

GOULD, John (1804-1881). The Birds of Great Britain. London: Taylor and Francis for the Author, 1862-1873. Original parts I-XVIII, XXI-XXV only (lacking parts XIX & XX), 2° (560 x 385mm). 5pp. subscriber's list. 348 FINE HAND-COLOURED LITHORAGPHED PLATES, most heightened with gum arabic, by Gould, Henry Constantine Richter, Joseph Wolf and William Hart most lithographed by Richter and Hart, printed by Walter or Walter & Cohn. (Occasional light spotting to text, very occasionally just affecting a few plates.) Original paper-covered cloth-backed boards, each upper cover with a printed title including a wood-engraved vignette, a list of the birds contained within and the date of publication (some scuffing and light soiling, the contents of part XXV loose within their binding). Provenance : auction? ticket pasted to upper cover of part I ( 'Lot 605A'). FIRST EDITION. A FINE NEAR-COMPLETE SET OF THE RARE ORIGINAL PARTS. "The most popular of all [Gould's] works is always likely to be Birds of Great Britain ..' ( Fine Bird Books p.29). The text is, of course, longer than in any of Gould's other works and the illustrations, many of them prepared from freshly killed specimens, include many more depictions of chicks, eggs and nests. Wolf, who drew 57 of the plates, had accompanied Gould on an ornithological tour of Scandinavia in 1856, and was instrumental in persuading Gould and Richter to adopt a livelier treatment of the illustrations. Zimmer p.261; Fine Bird Books p.78; Wood p.365; Nissen IVB 372; Sauer 23. Sold, as a collection of plates, not subject to return. (23)
