(Some spotting to vols. I to V.) Contemporary dark green morocco gilt, g.e. (Covers of vol.I affected by damp, head of spines of vols.II and IV with rodent damage). Provenance : Duke of Manchester (Kimbolton Castle library label). SUBSCRIBER'S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF GOULD'S "MASTERPIECE... AN INCOMPARABLE CATALOGUE AND COMPENDIUM OF BEAUTIES" ( Fine Bird Books p.29). Most of the subjects came from Gould's own collection of specimens. The plates gave him a chance to display the new technique of imitating the birds' iridescent plumage by the use of brilliant metallic colouring.
