Beschreibung:

GOULD, John (1804-1881) [and Nicholas Aylward VIGORS (1787-1840)]. A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains . London: [for the author], 1831[-1833].
GOULD, John (1804-1881) [and Nicholas Aylward VIGORS (1787-1840)]. A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains . London: [for the author], 1831[-1833]. Large 2° (544 x 362mm). 80 fine hand-coloured lithographic plates with the backgrounds uncoloured, by and after Elizabeth Gould after sketches by John Gould, printed by Charles Hullmandel. (Some variable light spotting.) Contemporary green morocco gilt by Hering, sides with wide border, spines elaborately tooled, gilt turn-ins (extremities lightly rubbed.) FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF THE FIRST OF GOULD'S FAMOUS FOLIOS which in two respects differs from his later monographs. The backgrounds of the plates are uncoloured (like Lear's Parrots , to which it is much indebted) and the text is largely the work of Nicholas A. Vigors. None of the subsequent texts were written by anyone other than Gould himself. Although Mrs. Gould's 80 plates depict 102 figures, two of these are of young males of species already represented elsewhere, so in fact she is faithful to the title A Century of Birds . Zimmer p.251; Anker 168; Fine Bird Books (1990) p.101; Nissen IVB 374; Sauer 1; Wood p.364.
