Henry Sotheran & Co., [1880-] 1887. 6 volumes in-folio (544 x 360 mm). 418 planches lithographiées d'après John Gould H. C. Richter et W. Hart tirées pour la plupart par Hullmandel & Walton, finement coloriées ou rehaussées et gommées. (Rares rousseurs.) Maroquin vert uniforme (pour les 5 premiers volumes, le Supplément relié à l'époque dans le style), large roulette sur les plats, dos à nerfs ornés, roulette intérieure (dos des 5 volumes légèrement passés, plat inférieur du premier volume avec trace de mouillure, coiffe du volume IV arrachée, infimes éraflures, coins du Supplément légèrement usés et un mors éraflé). Provenance : Kimbolton Castle (ex-libris). ÉDITION ORIGINALE DU CHEF-D'OEUVRE DE GOULD TANT DU POINT DE VUE INCONOGRAPHIQUE QUE TECHNIQUE. "His Monograph of the Trochilidae in five volumes and Supplement, the most stupendous of tropical publications, came out over the years in 1849-87, with 418 hand-coloured plates. A new technical process, which was the result of long experiment, had to be invented in order to portray their metallic plumage... The Trochilidae nevertheless, is an incomparable catalogue and compenium of beauties. The humming-birds are depicted, wherever possible, darting or hovering near their appropriate flowers... All in all, the Trochilidae of Gould is his masterpiece, and must ever remain a feast of beauty and a source of wonder" ( Fine Bird Books pp. 35sq.). Gould décéda peu après la publication de la première livraison du supplément. Néanmoins, Sharpe assura la rédaction des textes, Hart termina les 58 planches et Osbert Salvin en supervisa la production. La collection d'oiseaux naturalisés de Gould, qui comptait 5.378 spécimens de colibris, fut finalement achetée par la Zoological Society et fait aujourd'hui partie des collections du British Museum.
