Provenance : Girolamo Caratti of Udine (ownership inscription, dated 1811, on an endpaper). FIRST EDITION of Gori Gandellini's excellent biographical dictionary of engravers from earliest times, illustrated in many cases with their marks and monograms. A continuation of his work up to 1816 was undertaken early in the next century by Pietro de Angelis and was greatly censured by Cicognara. The present book is dedicated to "Signore Earle, cavaliere inglese", presumably William Benson Earle (1740-1796), the Wiltshire philanthropist, traveller and musician. Cicognara 260 & 2281. (3)
