This poignant image of Gordon Parks' was originally titled Grandchildren of Mrs. Ella Watson, a government charwoman . These children lived with Mrs. Watson who was made famous by Gordon Park's iconic photograph American Gothic . She and her family were photographed in her home in August of 1942 by Park as part of his work for the Farm Security Administration, documenting the working class families and neighborhoods of Washington, DC. The image in this later printing was cropped closer to the children by the artist. The 1942 photograph is included in the 2018-19 traveling National Gallery exhibition Gordon Parks The New Tide, Early Work, 1940-1950 curated by Philip Brookman.
