GORDON, Charles G.] WILSON, Sir Charles (1836-1905). Autograph letter signed ("C.W. Wilson"), to Augusta Gordon, Dongola (the Nile), 5 May 1885. 4 pages, 8vo . "YOUR NOBLE BROTHER WAS KILLED JUST OUTSIDE THE GATE OR DOOR OF THE PALACE...": SIR CHARLES WILSON ON THE DEATH--AND THE JOURNALS--OF GEN. GORDON An important letter discussing General Gordon's death and his journals, telling her that all the information he has received so far indicates that "your noble brother was killed just outside the gate or door of the Palace, probably whilst on his way to the church where the ammunition was stored, and that he fell mortally wounded at the first volley." Wilson further reports that several pages of the journal were excised and that Gordon obliterated many lines himself: "I think I remember one passage in which he alludes to his practice of writing to relieve his feelings and then crossing out what he thought was too severe. One point struck me; that with all this the Journal read as if nothing had been crossed out; he had evidently 'pruned' it himself with great care. If the Journal does not read so now there must have been further pruning since it left my hands..." He volunteers his services as an editor for the diaries, and hopes that "time has somewhat lessened your great sorrow." Wilson commanded the steamers that reached Khartoum on 28 January 1885, two days after the town fell.
