GORDON, Charles G. Two autograph letters signed ("C. G. Gordon") to Sir Samuel Baker, Southhampton, 12 November 1882; Jafa [Haifa], 14 August 1883. Together 7 pages, 8vo . WRITING FROM "THE LONELY WASTES OF EGYPT." Gordon tells Baker on 12 November 1882 that the politicial state of Egypt is 'inextricably tangled" and he does not see how Britain will ever get itself out of the "bungle," adding, ironically, that he is glad that he is "quite out of it." The following August, he takes some existential satisfaction from the bleakness of his surroundings: "I have always felt that in no place in the world could one become onself so well as in the lonely wastes of Soudan." He comforts Baker on the death of Baker's brother, and urges him to visit the Holy land, where Gordon would serve as his guide, showing him the site of Calvary and other famous spots. "This is a good land...one can conjure up Alexander the Great, Titus, Pompey, etc." (2)
