GORDON AGREES TO SERVE AS GOVERNOR OF THE CONGO: "I PROMISED [THE KING] IN 1880 TO DO SO & I MUST KEEP MY PROMISES" Gordon covers a variety of topics in this series of letters, from railroads to theology. The 17 November 1877 letter to Mr. Jansen contains instructions on the hiring of employees, the purchase of rail supplies, and plans for a systems of steamers on the Nile. In his 24 September 1883 letter to Sir Samuel Baker, he offers suggestions as to the spiritual education of Baker's daughters. His 2 January 1884 letter, docketed from Brussels, details his meeting with the Belgian King: "I saw the King tonight & he has proposed to me to resign my commission & to go to Congo. I promised him in 1880 to do so & I must keep my promise, so there is an end of the matter. The King wishes me to go next month, but I hope to see you ere I go." In the end, Gordon was compelled to break that promise and take up his final posting in Khartoum. (5)
