GOLDING, William (b. 1911). Lord of the Flies , London, Faber and Faber, 1954, 8°, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, front blank inscribed to "John Arlott from William Golding with thanks for Fiery Fred," original cloth, dust-jacket. William Golding was born in Cornwall in 1911. This was his first novel. He published a volume of Poems in 1934, of which he said much later: "I'm happy to think no copy is obtainable anywhere" (cf. The Guardian Dec. 20, 1971, p.8). This copy of what is still his most celebrated novel contains a loosely-inserted p.c. to Arlott, post-marked Salisbury 17 Oct. 1983 (just ten days after he had been awarded the Nobel prize), reading: "We might well enjoy Alderney for a few days as you say, if THEY let us alone along enough (Hist. You knew it before but I didn't -- fame isn't what it's cracked up to be!)". John Arlott's biography of F.S. Trueman, Fred, portrait of a fast bowler -- to which Golding may refer in his inscription -- was published in 1971.
