GOLDEN COCKEREL PRESS -- The Garden of Caresses. Translated from the Arabic by Franz Toussaint: now rendered into English by Christopher Sandford . [London:] The Golden Cockerel Press, [1934]. 4° (212 x 159mm). Title printed in green and black. 8 engraved vignettes to part-titles by and after Gertrude Hermes Additional set of 6 loose engravings by and after Hermes, all signed in pencil, 3 also dated. (Occasional very light spotting.) Original vellum gilt, 'Golden Cockerel' device on upper board, lettered in gilt on the spine, pocket for additional engravings in lower pastedown, top edge gilt, others uncut (boards very slightly bowed). NO. III OF AN UNSPECIFIED NUMBER OF SPECIALLY-BOUND COPIES WITH THE ADDITIONAL PLATES, SIGNED BY SANDFORD AND HERMES. 275 copies of the work bound in vellum-backed boards were offered at 24 shillings, and an unspecified number in the full vellum binding with the additional engravings for 5 guineas. Loosely inserted are TWO AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED FROM HERMES TO CHRISTOPHER SANDFORD AND OWEN RUTTER, Due South, Walberswick, Suffolk and St. Peters Square, [London], W.6, 'Monday' and 4 April, 4 pages and one page, 4° , that to Sandford apparently discussing the illustrations for The Garden of Caresses , agreeing with Sandford that an 'Eastern' style would not be required nor appropriate, despite Rutter's suggestions, and subsequently annotated by Sandford with his cabled reponse to Hermes: 'Wired ... Carry right on! Rutter will appreciated your viewpoint. Sandford'. The letter to Rutter encloses 'the prints from the 6 blocks made for Selborne. May I have them back sometime with the book', and presumably refers to the illustrations prepared for an edition of Gilbert White's Natural History of Selborne , which had been commissioned in the 1930s by the Gregynog Press, but remained unpublished until 1988.
