Letter sheet on grey wove paper. A double sheet, with two views and a map by G.H. Baker. Four columns of text are below each of the two images. The first engraving measures 13x20 cm (5x8"), and the map 10.5x6 cm (4½x2"), the second image measures 16x26 cm (6½x10½"). Together, the two sheets measure 47x28 cm (18¼x11¼"). Scarce Gold Rush era letter sheet. The first view shows the growing town from Rincon Point, June 1, 1849, with a map of the Vicinity of San Francisco to the right; the second is a view from the same vantage point, December, 1854. Originally the images were pages 1 and 4 of a double sheet. In this example the double sheet was separated at the fold and the two images professionally joined together so that the 1849 view is above the other scene. Baird no. 251.
