Beschreibung:

Gold Pendant, Giacomo Manzu, with Chain Necklace The large oval pendant of textured gold depicting the outline of a bearded man's face, completed by a necklace composed of elongated rectangular-shaped links, spaced by small polished gold balls, joined by small circular links, pendant signed Manzu, II-VI, approximately 47.7 dwts. Length 20 7/8 inches. Provenance: Estate of Sidney Cohen Giacomo Manzu (1908-1991), was an Italian self-taught sculptor known for his religious, figurative and sexual motifs in his sculpture and works on paper. Manzu began his career at an early age as an apprentice to a wood carver, his decision to become a sculptor stemmed from his natural talent and he gained inspiration for his early works from the ancient Greeks and medieval stonework. Manzu's focus was on the form and lines of his subjects, not always the theories that were set within. His later themes included the Crucifixion and the cardinal, and are recognized in his bronze series based on the death of Jesus Christ, and the "Death Gate" for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. This pendant is an excellent example of Manzu's work combining the relief of sculpture and the form and lines of the subject, which are comparable to a series of etchings that he did of Michelangelo and King Oedipus. C
Gold is rich yellow gold color. There is an abstract cut-out hole above eyes. Good condition. 31/4 x 2 11/16".
