Beschreibung:

burl with inset brass medallion in lid with half-length uniformed portrait of Garabaldi with name arched above, and with silvered bezel and glass cover. The friction-fitted lid has an inlaid ivory surround, and is set with rhinestones and brass tacks. Edged with rosewood trim; 3.25" diameter. Garibaldi was born in Nice on July 4th, 1807. His father was a fisherman and coastal trader, and like many other young men, Giuseppe went to sea, rising to master in 1832. In his travels he met Giuseppe Mazzini, and not only joined the growing unrest in Italy, but eventually became known as one of the "patron saints" of the Italian Rigorgimento. The primary goals of Mazzini and Garibaldi were Italian unification and the abolition of the Papal states, that at the time divided Italy. More generally, they supported republicanism, democracy and the liberation of all oppressed peoples. The leaders of the revolution were forced into exile a number of times. While in hiding, Mazzini and Garibaldi continued to garner support, although most of it came from the common people, not the leaders of the various Italian states. During some of these exile periods Garibaldi spent time in South America aiding various revolutionary causes, particularly in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. In 1836 he met his Brazilian-born wife, who was to become a heroine of the Italian revolution, fighting alongside her husband until her death in 1849. That same year, Garibaldi was pursued by a Papal army of 100,000. Not one Italian peasant gave the army his location, and he escaped one more time. Garibaldi also spent time in North Africa and America. He is the only person ever offered a ticker tape parade in New York who refused the offer. Although known as an Italian liberator, Garibaldi was a citizen of the world, fighting for the oppressed everywhere he could travel. He retired into private life in the island of Caprera where he died on June 2nd, 1882 and where he is still buried. Condition:Minor damage and losses; VG.
