Title with printer’s woodcut device, one woodcut illustration, and 126 emblems, woodcut headpieces and initials. (Title very lightly soiled, lacks blank r4 at end, a few spots.) Brown morocco by Riviere, oval shaped motif with interlacing lines on sides, gilt lettered decorated spine, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (new endpapers). Provenance : [H. Yates Thompson] -- S. A. Thompson Yates (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. Gabriele Simeoni’s emblems and devices appear in the first half of the book, those of Paolo Giovio in the second. Each page of text consists of an emblem with a motto framed by an ornamental design with a quatrain beneath.
