Focillon pp. 294-296. A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST PARIS EDITION of the Opere varie . Bringing together some of Piranesi's most imaginative work ( Carceri , Grotteschi ) and fine architectural studies ( Prima parte and others), the Opere varie was first published in 1750 and then several times at Rome before the plates were transferred to Paris, where the artist's son, Francesco Piranesi restruck them for the present edition. Although the edition is undated, the plates were not in Paris until 1800 and by 1810 Francesco had deposited some of them with his creditors. The presence of Tessier's binder's ticket in the present copy confirms the date, since his shop was located at this address between 1803 and 1809, an address he shared with the Piranesi calcography. This copy conforms with Robison's fourth (first Paris) edition.
