A group of eight autograph letters signed, 'Will: Gilpin', and one initialled 'W.G.', the earliest at Cheam, the others at Vicar's Hill, near Lynton, Hampshire, 1776-1803, the first to his nephew Will (William Sawrey Gilpin , 18 January 1776, concerning some travel information, the others to the publishers Cadell & Davies, concerning books, publications and publishing matters, six with draft replies or fragments written on the letter or a separate sheet, a total of 16 pages plus draft replies, mostly 4to, together with an additional unsigned autograph fragment and draft reply, both dealing with Gilpin's Western Tour, an undated fragment concerning instructions to Cadell about a catalogue for a proposed sale after his death with a fragment of a note from an aunt to her nephew concerning medicine to verso, plus a third party letter from Mr Gilpin [William Gilpin's son?] to Messrs. France and Banting, 1819, and two autograph letters signed from Lord Kenyon to the Reverend William Gilpin (son of William Gilpin dated 1806 & 1807, concerning church matters, etc., 6 pp. with integral address leaves, seal tears, 4to William Gilpin was an English artist, Anglican cleric, schoolmaster and author of works on the picturesque. After working as a curate, Gilpin became master, and in 1755 headmaster, at Cheam School. He stayed there until 1777 when he became vicar of Boldre in the New Forest in Hampshire.
