Provenance : Gerard Hasse (contemporary inscription on title). FIRST EDITION of Josias Simler's scarce authorized abridgement, with his own additions, of Gesner's Bibliotheca . Simler was one of Gesner's close friends and his first biographer. He was professor of theology at Zurich, also teaching mathematics and astronomy. The work is sometimes catalogued under "Lycosthenes" or "Wolfhart." Conrad Lycosthenes published an unauthorized Epitome , or Elenchus , in 1551, whose inaccuracies infuriated Gesner.
