Epitome bibliothecae Conradi Gesneri, conscripta primum à Conrado Lycosthene Rubeaquensi: nunc denuo recognita & plus quàm bis mille authorum accessione (qui omnes asterisco signati sund) locupletata . Edited, with additions, by Josias SIMLER (1518-1561). Zurich: Christopher Froschauer, 1555. 2 o (310 x 193 mm). Woodcut printer's device on title-page. (Small wormhole affecting some letters, marginal repair on last leaf.) Late eighteenth/early nineteenth-century half calf, spine gilt, green morocco lettering pieces. Provenance : Gerard Hasse (contemporary inscription on title). FIRST EDITION of Josias Simler's scarce authorized abridgement, with his own additions, of Gesner's Bibliotheca . Simler was one of Gesner's close friends and his first biographer. He was professor of theology at Zurich, also teaching mathematics and astronomy. The work is sometimes catalogued under "Lycosthenes" or "Wolfhart." Conrad Lycosthenes published an unauthorized Epitome , or Elenchus , in 1551, whose inaccuracies infuriated Gesner.
