George Jones Majolica 'Blue Tit' Butter Dish, Cover and Stand Circa 1875 Impressed GJ monogram and cypher, black painted shape no. 3376 / H The rustic ground molded with scattered strawberry blossoms; the domed cover finial modeled as a blue-tit pecking fruit. Diameter of bowl 5 1/2 inches; diameter of stand 7 1/4 inches. Note: This form is associated with a series of wares made for serving strawberries. Literature: Majolica International Society, Karmason Library, no. KL001536. Marilyn G. Karmason with Joan B. Stacke, Majolica, A Complete History and Illustrated Survey , New York, 1989, p. 92 and p. 90 for two illustrations of the Vienna exhibition of 1873 which were reproduced by Llewellynn Jewitt, Ceramic Art of Great Britain, 1883 and include this form.
