Beschreibung:

GEORGE GORDON NOEL, LORD BYRON Autograph letter signed , 2 pp. text with 2 pp. conjugate address leaf with seal affixed, to Lord Sidney Osborne, dated June 11, 1821 from Ravenna, Italy. Page size 10 x 7 3/8 inches (25 x 18 cm), approximately 30 lines in all, plus the addressed page to Osborne. Tear with loss to the address page where the seal was partially affixed (just affecting the first line of the address), a few very minor defects at the folds, overall sound. An exceptional letter to Lord Sidney Osborne, a relation of Byron's by marriage, who was Secretary General to Lord Maitland (then the Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands) at Corfu. It was Osborne who received Byron's embalmed body at Zante in 1824. Byron writes, in part: "You will think me very troublesome. But this occasion is particular. The bearers of this [letter], Signor Gallina, Signor Trion, and another, are friends of mine compelled to leave their own country by the Austrian interference with the Papal Government, in four and twenty hours. In a state of despair, they have begged of me a letter to any personage likely to afford them some protection at Corfu"... Byron was deeply involved with the Italian independence movement, which had suffered serious reversals. The letter is on paper watermarked "Sub umbra/Alarum Tuarum," with Pope Pius VII's portrait etc. This watermark appears frequently in Byron and Teresa Guiccioli's correspondence from the Ravenna period, as noted in the Pforzheimer catalogue and elsewhere. Provenance: With Edgar H. Wells, 1920s, catalogue clipping and original autograph sleeve retained. C Estate of Ann Thayer
