Beschreibung:

George Garrard (1760-1826) and Sawrey Gilpin (1737-1807) Engravings from the works of George Garrard and some examples from that celebrated painter Sawrey Gilpin with a few etchings from their own hands. London, 1816. Large 2° (562 x 435mm). Letterpress title within a border of typographic ornaments, 1 leaf 'The pedigree and performances of Highflier', 1 leaf 'The pedigree and performances of Soldier', 1 leaf 'The pedigree and performances of Sir Peter Teazle', each printed in letterpress verso only. 58 engraved, etched, mezzotint or aquatint plates, including a number of proofs, and trial pulls (6 double-page, 46 mounted, 2 printed on a single sheet) all by or after Garrard or Gilpin. (Spotting to about 15 plates.) Near-contemporary brown half morocco, titled in gilt on spine (scuffed, tear to marble paper on upper cover). Provenance : Mrs. Gilpin (presentation inscription from Garrard "This little collection of prints is very respectfully presented to Mrs. Gilpin by the Publisher, to acknowledge the Friendship he enjoyed so long with her Kinsman, the Late Mr. William Gilpin G. Garrard 22 Feb 1825"); manuscript notes (occasional notes in pencil in a single unidentified later-19th century hand). A PRESENTATION ALBUM CONTAINING A FINE REPRESENTATIVE SELECTION FROM THE CAREERS OF TWO OF THE MORE IMPORTANT ANIMAL PAINTERS OF THE EIGHTEENTH AND EARLY-NINETEENTH CENTURIES. Sawrey Gilpin R.A., was the seventh child of Captain John Bernard Gilpin an amateur artist who lived in Northumberland, and younger brother of the Rev. William Gilpin (1733-1807) of Picturesque Tours fame. Sawrey Gilpin initially received instruction in art from his father, however at the age of 14 he was sent to London to study under Samuel Scott where he remained for 10 years. His talent for animal painting brought him to the attention of the Duke of Cumberland and his independant career began with a commission from the Duke to draw in his study at Windsor and Newmarket. He was elected president of the Society of Artists in 1774, A.R.A. in 1795 and R.A. in 1797. After the death of his wife he spent his remaining years with his daughters in Brompton, London. Other important patrons included Colonel Thornton and, later, Samuel Whitebread. George Garrard A.R.A., came from a family of artists which traced its origins back to Marcus Garrard, painter to Queen Elizabeth I. Garrard studied at the Royal Academy schools and under Sawrey Gilpin and he exhibited at the R.A. from 1781 until his death in 1826. By 1793 he was styling himself "Painter of Horses to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales". Garrard also worked for Colonel Thornton, producing a number of pictures recording the latter's Sporting Tour through the Northern Parts of England , these were engraved and appeared as illustrations in the book of the same name. The present album constitutes a family enterprise: Garrard had married Gilpin's daughter and they had also collaborated on a number of paintings. Given the large number of children and grand-children of Captain Gilpin, it is difficult to establish exactly which Mrs. Gilpin the present album was presented to. However, the wife of William Sawrey Gilpin (1762-1843) is the likely recipient. Cf. Siltzer pp.123 & 124-5 (for brief biographical details, together with details of some of Garrard and Gilpin's printed works); cf. Mellon British Sporting and Animal Prints pp.76-78; 80-81.
