Hand-coloured additional lithographic title, lithographic dedication to Prince Albert, 2pp. list of subscribers, 60 hand-coloured tinted lithographic plates. Contemporary red morocco, covers panelled in gilt, gilt spine, gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (extremities rubbed and scuffed). Provenance : Sir John Brown (of Endcliffe Hall, Sheffield; armorial bookplate) -- Sir Walter Lawry Buller (armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION OF THIS 'EXTREMELY FINE AND IMPORTANT SURVEY OF THE MAORI PEOPLE' WITH AN IMPORTANT PROVENANCE. Walter Buller (1838 - 1906) grew up at Tangiteroria, Kaipara. After the family moved to Wellington in 1855, he became native interpreter in the Magistrate's Court. He was later involved in land purchases for the Wellington provincial government, and then practised as a barrister, specialising in Native Land Court business. 'Buller held the prevailing view that the native plants, birds and people of New Zealand would inevitably be displaced by the more vigorous European immigrants' (DNZB). This view was shared by Angas, stating in the preface: 'Up to the present time, the New Zealander... has never been carefully and faithfully portrayed; and his habits, costumes, and works of art, though so rapidly disappearing before the progress of Christianity and Civilization, are yet unrecorded by the pencil of the artist'. Abbey Travel 589; Colas 132; Ellis, Early Prints of New Zealand , pp.113-120; Hocken p.129-31 ('RARE'); Tooley 61. Visit www.christies.com for further information.
