George Edward Marston (1882-1940) A Depot Party among Crevasses signed and dated 'Geo Marston. 08' (lower right) bodycolour 10 x 14in. (25.4 x 35.6cm.) PROVENANCE: Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton (1874-1922), and thence by descent. EXHIBITED: (probably) London, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, The British Antarctic Expedition, 1907-9 , July-Oct. 1909, 'Water-colour drawings, pastels, etchings, &c. by George Marston', no.6 ("Crevasse." Depot Party on Barrier.) LITERATURE: E.H. Shackleton, The Heart of the Antarctic , London, 1909, II, coloured plate facing p.58. The picture records the Bluff Depot Party out on the Barrier in January 1908. Led by Joyce, the party of four included Mackintosh, Day and Marston and took 800lb of provisions to a depot opposite the Bluff for the returning Southern Party. The party, including the dogs, were roped together for safety and all survived falls into the crevasses on the journey out to the depot and back (see E.H. Shackleton, op. cit ., II, pp. 52-69 'The Bluff Depot Journey').
