GEOFFROI DE PONTUAL, Bishop of Saint Malo (1231-1255, d.1259). Vidimus of a grant by DONOALD, Bishop of Aleth (1120-1143), of half of the revenues of the church of St-Pierre de Corseul to the Abbey of Marmoutier, in Latin, dated at Marmoutier the summer feast of St Martin (4 July) 1123, vellum, 263 x 192 mm (possibly retrieved from binding, two corners cropped, slight staining and small tear in text and mended tear below).

The vidimus, undated, was issued by 'G dei gratia macloviensis episcopus'; its highly ornate script, with intricately decorated long ascenders, shows that it was written in the 13th century when the only possible Bishop of St-Malo was Geoffroi de Pontual, thus dating the document to between 1231 and 1255. It repeats the terms of a grant by Donoald, bishop of Aleth, the see moving to St-Malo in 1146. At the request of the cleric John, son of Walter, to whom the rights belong 'quasi iure heredicario', half of the revenues of the church of St-Pierre in Corseul -- 'villa que corsolt apellatur' -- is given to God, St Martin and the abbey of Marmoutier (founded by, and dedicated to, St Martin), with the consent of Gilbert, archbishop of Tours (Gilbert de Maillé, 1118-1125); the original was sealed by Donoald and witnessed by various dignatories, led by Guillaume, abbot of Marmoutier (d.1129), and including Geoffroy of Dinant, Rainald of Château-Gontier, several clerics from the archdiocese of Tours, among them the archdeacon of Blois and the prior of All Saints, Angers, and ending with some of the monks of Marmoutier. Disputes over this grant may have made an attested copy desirable over a century later (see J.H. Geslin de Bourgogne and A.J.-B.A. de Barthelemy, Anciens évêchés de Bretagnes , 1855-64, IV, p.395). It was immediately contested by the monks of St-Jacut-de-la-Mer but Bishop Donoald dismissed their case in 1129. He was responsible for other grants to Marmoutier, one of the most prestigious abbeys in France, and obviously carefully planned this gift to coincide with St Martin's day.
