Lot includes: a leather-bound memorial pamphlet printed by The Military Service Institution, where Ruger served as president for the final 6+ years of his life, noting its drafting at a special meeting convened the day after his death and signed by Major General Alexander S. Webb, the vice president of the institution; four string-bound memorial pamphlets printed by an unspecified military organization, possibly West Point, upon Ruger's death; a memorial pamphlet printed by the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Headquarters Commandery of the State of New York, November 30, 1907, by order of Rear-Admiral Joseph B. Coghlan; a 5.75" x 7.75" steel engraving of the General Ruger ca 1865, Engraved expressly for Wisconsin in the War of the Rebellion by the Western Engraving Co. of Chicago, inked with Ruger's actual signature; two summaries of Ruger's career, written by the general himself, date 1891, one of which is an inked draft, the other typewritten; and a 6pp family history, handwritten by Gen. Ruger in 1896, tracing his history on the American continent to 1638, and apparently written as part of an application to an unspecified organization. General Thomas H. Ruger (1833-1907) served the U.S. Army in several capacities over a long, distinguished career. He graduated third in his class from West Point but was initially dissatisfied with army life and quit to become a lawyer in his home state of Wisconsin in 1855. Upon the outbreak of the war, he accepted a commission as Lt. Col. of the 3rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and went on to lead troops in several key battles including Antietam (where he was wounded), Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg (for which he was brevetted brigadier general), played a major role in suppressing the New York City draft riots, and provided support for Sherman's Atlanta campaign and late-war operations in Tennessee and North Carolina. Ruger was then appointed military governor of Georgia and led operations of the Freedmen's Bureau in Alabama before becoming superintendent of West Point 1871-76. He retired in 1897 a Major General in the regular army.
