GEILER von Kaisersberg, Johan (1445-1510). Das Buch Granatapfel . Strasburg: Johan Knoblauch, 1511.
GEILER von Kaisersberg, Johan (1445-1510). Das Buch Granatapfel . Strasburg: Johan Knoblauch, 1511. 4° (305 x 205mm). 6 woodcuts WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURING, 2 or more of these after H[ans] B[aldung], woodcut initials. (Without blank G6, occasional mostly marginal spotting, soiling, and browning, more pronounced on title, occasional marginal dampstain.) Contemporary blind-panelled calf over wooden boards, upper board titled in blind, contemporary brass bosses, corner-pieces, catches and clasps (lacking one corner-piece, endpapers dampstained). Provenance : Jacob ?Forcher (contemporary title inscription, and occasional marginalia) -- Georg Hauser (17th-century inscription on front endpaper). First Strasburg edition, in a handsome contemporary binding, and with Hans Baldung's woodcuts coloured by a contemporary hand. Geiler was one of the greatest popular preachers of his time; a number of his sermons were inspired by German folklore and his Granatapfel is an important source for the customs and beliefs at the beginning of the 16th-century. This Strasburg edition follows the first edition published a year earlier in Augsburg by the heirs of J. Diemar with woodcuts by Hans Burgkmair Adams G-310; BL STC German 335.
