Full-page engraved frontispiece and 12 full-page engraved plates after Wilhelm Schuppert von Ehrenberg by Johann Ulrich Kraus Johann Jacob von Sandrart and Georg Christoph Eimmart (Small repair to lower corner of frontispiece, pale marginal dampstain at end.) Contemporary marbled boards. Provenance : acquired from Lucien Goldschmidt, 1984. FIRST EDITION of this fête book published on the occasion of the celebration of Joseph I's coronation as King of the Romans in 1690 at the age of eleven. Joseph I (1678-1711) became Holy Roman Emperor in 1705. The plates symbolize the various virtues of the ruler: prudence, justice, fortitude, equanimity, etc. They show several palace interiors, a harbor scene with a ship being drawn up over a logs by pulley, a wild tempest, Circe charming the animals, an outdoor court with star-shaped fountain, putti acting as astronomers with telescopes and other implements, several battle scenes and a modern-looking garden design before the mountains. Each plate has an emblematic banner and is followed by two leaves of text and one leaf of poetry. Holzmann-Bohatta III:11255. Mounted on flyleaf is a miniature with portraits of Leopold and his son Joseph supporting a coat-of-arms painted on vellum and signed by Johann Michael Prechler, Vienna, 1693. The Vershbows purchased this separately and mounted it on the flyleaf.
