GARNETT, Edward (1868-1936). Turgenev: A Study . Foreword by Joseph Conrad. London: Collins, 1917. 8°, frontispiece portrait. Original cloth (spine faded). PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed to "Olivia R. Garnett from Edward" on front free endpaper -- subsequently the gift of Olivia to Elsie Hueffer, with inscription beneath "Elsie Hueffer from O.R.G., Xmas 1937." FIRST EDITION. GARNETT, E. An Imaged World: Poems in Prose . London: J.M. Dent, 1894. 8°, 5 plates after William Hyde Original cloth (slightly stained, corners bumped). PRESENTATION COPY, half title inscribed in pencil, "From the author, Jun. 95". FIRST EDITION -- GARNETT, E. The Art of Winifred Matthews . London: Duckworth, 1902. 4°, 8 plates after the artist. Original cloth-backed boards. PRESENTATION COPY, front free endpaper inscribed to "Ford & Elsie from Edward, October 1902". FIRST EDITION. No. 185 of 300 copies; and the Letters of Anton Tchehov (1920) translated by Constance Garnett. One of the earliest remembered acts of Hueffer's life was to offer a chair to Turgenev (October, 1881). Edward Garnett, author of the above critique on the Russsian novelist, was a close friend and as reader for T. Fisher Unwin instrumental in publishing The Brown Owl (1891). Edward's sister, Olive, was very attached to both Hueffer boys, but when Ford's divorce occured the sympathy of the Garnetts lay entirely with Elsie, and Olive was clearly still in touch with her as late as 1937.
