Gargantuan royal inspeximus, recording King James IIs reissuing of a Tudor document in favour of Sir Ralph Sadler, in Latin, single-sheet on parchment [England (Westminster), dated 6 July 1687] Single enormous sheet, ruled in red for 46 long lines in fine and professional English secretarial hand, key words in larger version of same, endorsed at foot, first line of text: [J]acobus Secundus Dei gratia Ang[lie] in fine calligraphic penwork with capitals in ornate versions of same encased in swirling penwork foliage, with large block printed image of king in oval set to side of main initial (ornate penwork, but again printed), upper border with a block printed satyr and a wildman with a club wrestling with scrolling acanthus leaves, these enclosing the royal arms of England, text frame and each section of border ruled in double red lines, right hand edge perhaps trimmed away to edge of this red frame, tags for seal present but seal wanting, overall excellent condition, 890 by 630mm.; framed flat in perspex over faded pink silk mount Sir Ralph Sadler (or Sadleyr as here; 1507-87) had a remarkably long career, surviving four Tudor monarchs in the turbulent years of the mid-sixteenth century. He was fostered by Thomas Cromwell and educated in French, Latin and Greek, acting as his secretary until entering royal service in the court of Henry VIII. Under that monarch he quickly clambered up the social ranks to join the Privy Council, then serving as Secretary of State and finally Ambassador to Scotland. He served Edward VI on his Council of Regency, withdrew from Marys court, but returned to Elizabeth Is Privy Council. He is one of the few English Renaissance statesmen for whom extant Parliamentary orations survive, and a portrait which is likely him survives by Hans Holbein the Younger (now Royal collection, Windsor Castle). At the time of his death he was reputed to be the richest commoner in England.
