GARFIELD, JAMES A., President . Autograph letter signed ("JAG") AS PRESIDENT, to Charles W. Clark, Washington, D.C., 30 June 1881. 1 page, 8vo, integral blank, on Executive Mansion stationery . Fine. THREE DAYS BEFORE HIS ASSASSINATION, PRESIDENT GARFIELD OFFERS AN APPOINTMENT A very rare autograph letter as President, written in haste: "The Marshall for Mississippi has resigned. Will you accept the place. It is doubtful if the other matter can be adjusted before the end of the year..." On 2 July 1881 Charles Guiteau shot the President as he walked through the waiting room of the Baltimore and Potomac railroad station in Washington, D.C. Garfield suffered two gun shot wounds, but died 19 September 1881 of blood poisoning, a direct result of unsanitary medical procedures. Due to Garfield's preference for dictating letters, full autograph letters signed are exceedingly rare.
