The revised (and preferred) edition of Volume I, and the first Edition of volume II. Contemporary English acid-treated calf, red morocco title labels on spines. 8.25 x 5 inches (21 x 13 cm); xx, 414; xxxvii, [1], 432 pp. Nominal wear, a very attractive copy in handsome English bindings. The Richard Hart Davies copies, with his bookplates; Together with NEILL, PATRICK. Journal of a Horticultural Tour through some parts of Flanders, Holland, and the north of France, in the autumn of 1817. Edinburgh: Bell & Bradfute, 1823. First edition. Original brown boards with paper label on spine, uncut. 9 x 5 1/2 inches (23 x 14 cm); xvi, 574, [2] pp., illustrated with 7 black and white engraved plates, two of which are fold-out plans, by W.H. Lizars, after John Hay; 8 illustrations in text. Some light foxing to plates, joint starting, spine label worn, boards rubbed, but overall a good copy, uncut, in original boards. The first work is among the primary documents of the Picturesque movement spearheaded by Edmund Burke and William Gilpin This book was an attempt to discredit Capability Brown's theories of invasive landscaping. Price called for the recognition of the aesthetics that appear innately in Nature through time and benign neglect, a fundamentally Romantic theory of garden design. The second work provides the results of a tour by several very prominent Scottish gardeners and horticulturists to regions that had been, until recently, under Napoleonic control. C
