This was the first of a projected seven-issue series that Kurtzman planned to do. With the aid of sci-fi writer and Civil War scholar Fletcher Pratt, he laid out the entire war and organized it into separate story parts. It amounted to 28 stories. Unfortunately, only three issues were published due to indifferent reader response. The public were fools: Kurtzman's Civil War issues are among the best comics ever made. "All the stuff I put into the Civil War stories - it just wasn't that popular. They essentially were too subtle by comic book standards. A little too quiet.
