CORVINUS PRESS, 1936 4to, FIRST EDITION, number 23 of 24 copies, ONE OF 12 COPIES PRINTED ON MEDWAY PAPER, 3 plates, top edge gilt, mottled paper-covered boards, card slip case, prospectus for Medway paper from Japan Paper Company loosely inserted, slipcase, trace of bookplate (?) to front free endpaper, slipcase slightly stained and worn After visiting the castles in France he had planned to see for his thesis, Lawrence visited Chartres Cathedral on his way to Brittany. The letter he wrote to his mother on 28 August 1908, describing the cathedral, is one of the most revealing to have survived from this early period (see Jeremy Wilson, T.E. Lawrence).
