FROM THE ESTATE OF THE LATE ARTHUR NORRIS KENNARD 1956 JAGUAR XK140 DROPHEAD COUPE Registration No.TWD 222 Chassis No. 807162DN Engine No. G2644-8 Dark grey with red leather interior. Engine: six cylinder in line, 3,442cc; Gearbox: four speed with overdrive; Brakes: four wheel hydraulic drum; Suspension: independent front with double wishbones, semi elliptic leaf springs to rear. Right hand drive. The Jaguar XK140 was introduced at the London Motor Show in October 1954 to replace the Coventry company's well-received XK120. This new model essentially shared the styling lines of its predecessor as well as the chassis design. However, the XK140 also featured heavier Mk VII-type bumpers and more use of chromium plate. From the beginning it was available in open two-seater, fixed head coupe and drop head coupe body styles. The 190 bhp engine of the Special Equipment XK120 was adopted as standard, together with 3/8" lift camshafts, but with a single pipe exhaust system. For those who demanded even more power, the C-type head was available in the SE models. Crucially, the XK140 had its engine repositioned within the chassis frame, moving 3" further forward. This change enabled the bulkhead to move forward thereby providing much needed cockpit space. Other important improvements were the adoption of rack and pinion steering and for the first time overdrive was offered as an option on an XK. Again, the North American market was vital to the success of the model. This is a 1956 drophead coupe in original right hand drive format and is highly desirable to Jaguar collectors being one of only 479 produced in this form. We believe this example was purchased by the late Mr. Kennard of Bath in early 1971 and a letter on file from the widow of a previous owner suggests that the car has had only two private owners throughout its life. Mr. Kennard used the car regularly, according to the garage that serviced it, with the intention of completely restoring it one day. The body is generally sound although considerable work is required underneath the car, particularly to the rear end. New rear wings have been fitted at some time and the sills have been plated on both sides. The lower front wing sections and front apron have been replaced with new metal. Apparently the wheel spats fell off many years ago and were never to be seen again! The interior has original red leather seats with red door panelling whilst the hood fits well although it has perished along its seam. The engine started upon inspection but we were advised that there may be a leak from the water pump and that there is a small petrol leak, probably from the carburettors. It is fitted with an electric choke and has the desirable overdrive option to the gearbox . The paintwork has polished through in places and although it will shine up can only be described as in fair condition. The car does not carry a current MoT but is sold with a V5 registration document. Being a right hand drive version of the XK140 drophead coupe, with original engine, this is one of the most desirable specifications of XK Jaguar.
