Frith (William Powell, RA, after) Life at the Sea-Side, Ramsgate 1854, the first of Frith’s famous trio of bustling genre scenes, presenting the viewer with a wide spectrum of Victorian society, engraving by Charles William Sharpe, with hand-colouring, 645 x 1150 mm (25 3/8 x 45 1/4 in), a short tear in the upper left sky area, some marginal defects including some surface abrasions and dirt in the title field, hinged into mount, Art Union of London, [1859 or later] *** This work represented a departure for Frith from traditionally elegant costume subjects towards a more truthful representation of modern society at leisure, which met with fierce resistance from critics but proved hugely popular with the public and even drew Queen Victoria to purchase the original oil painting.
