Beschreibung:

FREUD, Sigmund and Joseph BREUER (1842-1925). Studien ber Hysterie . Leipzig and Vienna: Franz Deuticke, 1895. 8 o (230 x 151 mm). (Slight age-toning to margins of leaves.) Contemporary maroon half cloth and marbled boards, spine gilt-lettered and ruled, marbled edges, original printed yellow front wrapper bound in (ends of spine worn, some edge wear, binder's front free endpaper loose). Provenance : Sigmund Freud (ownership inscription on front wrapper); Wilhelm Fliess (presentation inscription on title-page to him from Freud); the Fliess family; Jeffrey Masson, editor of The Complete Letters of Sigmund Freud to Wilhelm Fliess: 1887-1904 (1985); acquired from Masson by Haskell F. Norman in 1989. FIRST EDITION. FREUD'S OWN COPY WITH PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION FROM HIM TO WILHELM FLIESS, his mentor and closest friend at the time, at top of title-page: "Seinem theuern Wilhelm Fliess/der Einer," with a line drawn down to circle Freud's printed name. Signed "Dr. Freud/3/5/95" at the top right corner of the bound-in front cover, which is also inscribed by Freud in pencil with a three-line passage from a German translation of Macbeth (Act IV, final scene); Jones (I, p.321) notes that Freud "constantly quoted" Shakespeare to Fliess during the period of their friendship. " Studien ber Hysterie [ Studies in Hysteria ], which gives the first detailed account of the free-association method, IS CUSTOMARILY REGARDED AS THE STARTING-POINT OF PSYCHOANALYSIS. Joseph Breuer had discovered the 'cathartic' method of curing hysteria in the early 1880s while treating the patient who would later be immortalized as "Anna O." [this book includes an account of her case]; this patient, who exhibited a myriad of hysterical symptoms, found that they would disappear when she told Dr. Breuer the details of their onset...Freud learned of this interesting case from Breuer shortly after its termination in June 1882...a few years later he began using a combination of hypnosis and the cathartic method in his own neurological practice. From this Freud gradually developed the method of free association, in which the patient was encouraged to say whatever came into his mind however 'nonsensical' or 'irrelevant,' since Freud believed that the patient's statements provided clues about the network of associations already established in his mind, and would thus lead the therapist to the source of the patient's neurosis. 'It was through devising the new method that Freud was enabled to penetrate into the previously unknown realm of the unconscious proper and to make the profound discoveries with which his name is imperishably associated' (Jones I, p.265)." "Wilhelm Fliess (1858-1928), became acquainted with Freud in 1887 and from 1895-1901 was Freud's closest friend; Jones (I, ch. 13) gives a detailed analysis of the relationship between the two men. Dr. Fliess, an ear, nose and throat specialist, had developed a theory of biological periodicity based on the human menstrual cycle; his willingness to recognize and discuss the 'forbidden territory' of sexuality made him a uniquely congenial companion for Freud at a time when the latter's continuing exploration of sexuality's role in the human psychology had caused him to lose Breuer's friendship and the respect of his medical colleagues. This copy of Studien ber Hysterie that Freud gave his friend was probably one of the 'author's copies' sent to Freud before publication; his signature on the front wrapper is dated '3/5/95' (i.e., 3 May 1895), but the book, according to Jones, (I, p. 277) did not appear until the middle of May [in an edition of 800 copies]" (Norman). Garrison-Morton 4978; Grinstein 214; Jones I, ch. 11, 13; Standard edition 1893a; Stanford 22; Norman F25.
