A very deferential and somewhat cryptic letter, written not long before he was given a command in North America. He writes: "Your intentions with respect to Mr. Talford have been made known to the Commander in chief, and I believe your Lordship will have no more trouble upon that point, Sir John & my Lord George Sackville (who undertook the business) are glad of an opportunity to show you the Civilities that are due to you...I have the honour to be." Etc. At this date, Wolfe, a veteran of Dettingen and the Battle of Culloden, was a Colonel. The following spring he was tapped to command in North America, and was part of the British force under Amherst that besieged and captured the French fortress of Louisburg, which surrendered 26 June 1758.
