Douglass, Frederick (b. unknown-1895). Famed abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. Partially printed deed, 3.5" x 8.5 in. when folded as issued, from Washington, DC, dated June 23, 1886, and signed in ink along bottom margin Fredk. Douglass, as "Recorder." Framed together with portrait of Douglass, 15.75 x 15 in. Possibly one of the most well-recognized men of his time, Douglass was an escaped slave from Maryland. He authored several books about his slave experience and toured around the world imploring the end of slavery and equal rights for all people. In 1877, one year after this signature, he revisited his old slave owner and, despite a wave of criticism, reconciled with his former owner. Douglass died of a massive heart-attack in 1895. Condition: Signature strong, legible. Document in very fine condition overall. Not examined outside of frame.
