Frederic Arthur Bridgman American, 1847-1928 The Rock of Monaco American, 1847-1928 The Rock of Monaco Signed F.A. Bridgman (ll) Oil on canvas 50 3/4 x 68 1/8 inches Provenance: M. Knoedler & Co., New York Purchased by the Honorable Hugh J. Grant March 18, 1899 In his maturity Frederic Bridgman, an inveterate traveler, broadened his subject matter from the orientalist themes that had earlier occupied him to include figure studies, decorative subjects, and landscapes such as the present work. He strongly objected to the broken brushwork and brighter colors of the Impressionist School, writing an anti-Impressionist tract, L'Anarchie dans l'Art in 1897. The Collection of Hugh J. Overall fine condition. Unlined. No evidence of craquelure; paint surface appears fresh and unyellowed. 1/2-inch repaired tear (with a 1 1/2 x 1 1/2-inch corresponding patch on the reverse) at left center with minimal inpaint, approximately 8-inches from the canvas edge in trunk of tree at extreme left. Scattered tiny flecks of inpaint in water at right apparent under UV examination. Not examined out of the frame. Inscribed on the stretcher, Monte Car.
