Beschreibung:

Franz Barwig (1868-1931), a patinated bronze model of a walking bear, naturalistically modelled and mounted on a green onyx base, signed in the bronze h:16 w:23 cm Franz Barwig the Elder (1868-1931) was one of Austria's most important and successful sculptors of his time. He studied in Vienna, becoming, in time, Professor of Sculpture at the Vienna School of Applied Arts. He studied the animals at the Vienna zoo, initially working in wood. His use of bronze developed with his involvement with the Secession Movement of Vienna. This movement, formed in 1897, with Gustav Klimt as first president, sought to move away from academic traditions to create a new style which owed nothing to historical influence. Barwig became one of the most important Art Nouveau artists working in Vienna at the turn of the century. In May 2014, the Belvedere Museum in Vienna put on a major exhibition of Barwig's work "Masterpieces in Focus: Franz Barwig the Elder" seeking to remind the public of the artist's pioneering work.
