Brissot, Condorcet, Rochefoucault, Le Roy &c.... London: Printed for J. Parsons, 1793. 8 o (225 x 137 mm). Half-title. Contemporary speckled calf-backed marbled boards, red morocco gilt-lettered label, ENTIRELY UNCUT; half morocco case. Provenance : Frankland (engraved bookplate) -- purchased from Ximenes, New York, 10 April 1967. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of this classic American autobiography, imperfectly translated from the Mémoires de la Vie Privée (Paris, 1791) and adding a spurious continuation, new anecdotal material and a eulogy by Fauchet. Franklin began the account for his son in 1771, but set it aside; the first portion was published in French in an unauthorized edition by Buisson. Franklin's original manuscript, believed to have been lost, resurfaced in 1818 in the possession of Franklin's grandson, William Temple Franklin. Grolier American 21 ("the most widely read of all American autobiographies...holds the essence of the American way of life"); Howes F323 ("aa"); Sabin 25573. AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE, UNCUT COPY.
