Frank Weston Benson (American, 1862-1951) The Gorge in Autumn Dedicated, signed, and dated "To Horace Dunham F.W. Benson '26" l.l., titled on the reverse. Watercolor with graphite on paper, sight size 15 1/2 x 13 3/4 in. (39.4 x 34.9 cm), framed. Condition: Toning, scattered foxing. Provenance: A private Mid-Atlantic collection. N.B. A member of 'The Ten' and one of the leading American Impressionist artists, Frank Benson worked in a variety of media, including oil, watercolor, and print, and produced portraits, landscapes, sporting scenes, and still lifes. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Benson first studied at Boston's Museum School before traveling to Paris, where he enrolled at the Academie Julian. After returning to the U.S. in 1885, he taught at Boston's Museum School and enjoyed a successful career, gaining membership to the Society of American Artists and winning many awards, including the Hallgarten Prize at the National Academy in New York. At this time Benson was best known for his graceful plein-air oil portraits, which incorporated elements of French Impressionism. Horace C. Dunham (1893-1934) was a Boston artist who produced landscapes and sporting scenes. Dunham was a member of the Copley Society, Boston, and exhibited at the Boston Art Club and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
